در درس قبلی تعدادی اصطلاحات انگلیسی را با موضوع لباس یاد گرفتیم. این درس در ادامه درس قبلی است و تعداد بیشتری اصطلاح با موضوع لباس را در این درس یاد خواهیم گرفت.
برای یاد گرفتن بهتر این اصطلاحات، بهتر است حتما مثالهای آنها را نیز کامل بخوانید. خواندن مثال از اصطلاحات انگلیسی باعث می شود تا نحوه استفاده از آنها را بهتر یاد بگیرید.
🔹 Caught with your pants down
🔸 to be completely surprised by something because you are not prepared for it. Caught in a vulnerable (often embarrassing) position or situation.
شوکه شدن، در وضعیتی بدون آمادگی قرار گرفتن. با یک اتفاق ناخوشایند و خجالت آور روبرو شدن
▪ The history pop quiz caught the entire class with their pants down.
امتحان تاریخ همه کلاس رو شوکه کرد
▪ When the boss started firing questions at me, I was caught with my pants down and looked like a fool. I just hadn’t considered all of those potential outcomes yet and didn’t know what to say!
وقتی رئیس شروع به سوال پیچی من کرد، شوکه شدم (در وضعیت بدی قرار گرفتم) و شبیه یک احمق شدم. من هنوز همه آن خروجی های بالقوه را در نظر نگرفته بودم و نمی دانستم چه بگویم!

🔹 Dressed to the nines/dressed to kill
🔸 Very well dressed and fashionable, typically in an attempt to impress other people.
حسابی شیک و پیک کردن، هفت قلم آرایش کردن، لباسهای مجلسی و شیک پوشیدن برای تحت تاثیر گذاشتن دیگران
▪ Everyone was dressed to the nines for the graduation dinner.
همه حسابی برای مهمانی نهار فارغ التحصیلی شیک کرده بودند
▪ I have to be dressed to the nines at this gala tonight—a lot of important people will be there.
▪ She was dressed up to the nines in her furs and jewellery.

🔹 Fine-tooth comb
🔸 if you go through something with a fine-tooth comb, you examine it very carefully. A phrase used to describe a way of doing something that is very careful and thorough.
با دقت بررسی کردن چیزی،
▪ Go through your essay with a fine-tooth comb before handing it in to your teacher.

🔹 Kid gloves
🔸 If you treat someone with kid gloves, you deal with them very gently or carefully. A metaphor for very gentle care, often to the point of coddling.
برخورد کردن با دیگران با دستکشهای کودکانه به معنی این است که با آن افراد بسیار ظریف و با دقت برخورد می کنید.
▪ I can’t stand the way my family always treats my younger brother with kid gloves, trying to protect him from every little thing!
من نمی تونم طوری که خانواده ام با برادر کوچکترم برخورد می کنند رو تحمل کنم، همیشه تلاش می کنند در برابر کوچکترین چیزی ازش محافظت کنند.
▪ We’ll need to handle the merger with kid gloves—both clients are extremely sensitive.
▪ A social worker complained that some parents treat their teenage children with kid gloves, and they end up acting like spoiled brats.
🔹 Walk a mile in someone’s shoes
🔸 To spend time trying to consider or understand another person’s perspectives, experiences, or motivations before making a judgment about them. you should try to understand someone before criticising them. The full idiom is: Before you judge someone, walk a mile in their shoes.
یعنی قبل از اینکه کسی را قضاوت یا از او انتقاد کنید، ابتدا سعی کنید او را بفهمید و خود را جای او بگذارید.
▪ My brother can come across as selfish or mean-spirited, but you should try walking a mile in his shoes before criticising him; he was bullied a lot in school.
برادر من ممکن است خودخواه یا بداخلاق به نظر برسد، اما شما باید سعی کنید قبل از انتقاد از او خود را جای او بگذارید. او در مدرسه بسیار مورد آزار و اذیت قرار گرفت.

🔹 Tighten your belt
🔸 To reduce, restrict, or limit one’s budget; to live more modestly or make financial sacrifices.
کمربندهایتان را محکم ببندید اصطلاحی است به معنی اینکه صرفه جویی اقتصادی کنید
▪ A: “I don’t know what we’ll do now that you lost your job.” B: “Don’t worry, we just need to tighten our belts for a while.
الف : من نمی دونم حالا که کارت رو از دست دادی باید چکار کنیم. ب : نگران نباش فقط یه مدتی باید صرفه جویی کنیم
▪ With the economy so bad and thousands of people losing their jobs, we all have to tighten our belts.
▪ Living on my own during college taught me how to tighten my belt and get by on not very much.
▪ Beginning to cost more and more. It looks like we’ll all have to tighten our belts. Times are hard, and prices are high. I can tighten my belt for only so long.
🔹 Dirty laundry (To wash your dirty laundry in public, air your dirty laundry in public)
🔸 One’s very private, personal matters, especially that which may be embarrassing.
موضوعات شخصی و خصوصی، به خصوص مواردی که باعث خجالت هستند. معمولا با افعال داخل پرانتز استفاده می شوند.
▪ My mum said she hates people who wash their dirty laundry in public.
مادر من میگه از آدمهایی که مسائل خصوصیشون رو در جمع جار می زنند متنفره.
▪ It always makes me uncomfortable when John starts going into all his personal problems whenever our friends get together. I just wish he wouldn’t air his dirty laundry in public like that.
▪ People have an unnatural fixation on the personal lives of celebrities, but I don’t see why they should be expected to wash their dirty laundry in public.
▪ I don’t want to hear about her dirty laundry. Why do you feel it necessary to gossip about things like this?
🔹 Hot under the collar
🔸 very angry about something
خیلی عصبانی، از کوره در رفته
▪ When I rejected my friend’s idea about eating at a fancy restaurant, he got rather hot under the collar.
وقتی نظر دوستم را درباره غذا خوردن در یک رستوران شیک رد کردم، او خیلی عصبانی شد
▪ The boss was really hot under the collar when you told him you lost the contract. I get hot under the collar every time I think about it.
▪ I’m sorry I got hot under the collar just then, I have a hard time hearing criticism about my novel.

🔹 Off the cuff
🔸 if you speak off the cuff, you say something without having prepared or thought about your words first
بدون آمادگی قبلی (بیشتر درباره سخنرانی یا حرف زدن)، بدون مقدمه
▪ He didn’t have time to prepare the presentation, so he just spoke off the cuff.
او فرصت آماده سازی ارائه اش را نداشت، برای همین بدون آمادگی صحبت کرد
▪ I didn’t have time to organize my thoughts, so I just spoke off the cuff.
▪ The senator has become known for making off-the-cuff remarks that create controversy.
▪ I’m not very good at making speeches off-the-cuff.
🔹 Hat / cap in hand
🔸 being very humble, usually asking for a favour or apologising for something bad you have done. In a meek or submissive manner.
باتواضع و فروتنی، باخضوع و خشوع، ازروی پستی، عموما در حالت عذرخواهی یا تقاضایی داشتن
▪ He was late for our study session, so when he finally arrived, hat in hand, he brought chocolates for everyone.
او برای جلسه مطالعه ما دیر آمده بود، بنابراین وقتی بالاخره رسید، با حالت عذرخواهی، برای همه شکلات آورد.
▪ I can’t believe I have to go back to my old boss with hat in hand and ask for my job back.
▪ I sure made a big mistake blowing my life savings on that stupid business venture. Now I have to go to my parents, hat and hand, and ask them to lend me some money.

🔹 Thinking cap
🔸 A state in which one thinks, especially carefully. if you put on your thinking cap, you think seriously about something
حسابی فکر کردن، با دقت و تمرکز فکر کردن برای حل مشکلی. وضعیتی که فردی در حال فکر کردن است
▪ As organisers of the debate competition, it is time for us to put our thinking caps on and decide the topics for this year.
به عنوان برگزارکنندگان مسابقه مناظره، زمان آن فرا رسیده است که فکرهای خودمان را روی هم بریزیم و در مورد موضوعات امسال تصمیم گیری کنیم.
